Tim Sweeney has been an integral voice on NYC radio for the last 14 years – he’s like the Funkmaster Flex of classic and bleeding-edge house, disco, post-punk and techno (but without all the bomb noises). Since 1999, his Beats in Space radio show on WNYU 89.1 FM (Tuesday nights, 10:30 p.m. – 1 a.m.) hasn’t missed a beat, introducing the world to the likes of DFA Records, Kompakt, Todd Terje and Pilooski from the basement of a college dorm building in the West Village. (You can also stream the radio show all over the world via iTunes and Tim’s archives.) In this interview, the charming Mr. Sweeney talks about little girls beating him up, why he still presses vinyl and what’s going on with his two-year-old record label, BiS.
Also on the NYC house and disco tip, we’ve got a free EP for you from DFA Records (longtime Sweeney friends), featuring four sweet remixes of The Juan Maclean by House of House, Canyons, Sh*t Robot and Gavin Russom.
Finally, if disco edits are your thing, check out this intensive video of The Rub DJs interviewing the master of the genre: Pilooski. The foxy Frenchman explains the ins and outs of remaking obscure old tracks in new and banging ways. Check it!
